We have to change the Education system to produce healthy citizens said Education Minister Susil Premajayantha who was the chief guest on Monday at the inaugural Sportsunleash schools awards ceremony held at BMICH.
The Minister said that studies and sports should go hand in hand which will help to produce healthy and outstanding students.Those days We did sports along with academic work. Vishmi Gunaratne of Ratnawali BMV Gampaha had 9 A' s at O/L and she is in the ICC under 19 world cup as Sri Lanka team captain which is an example to other students.
This time 10835 students had 9 A's at O/L. The system has to change and I want to build up good coordination among teachers and students. We have to change attitude and build up a healthy society through students. In addition school extra curricular activities will help to produce healthy students.
Eran Wickramaratne the former Minister and present MP was also present at this awards ceremony and the Education Minister pointed out that Eran Wickramaratne was a good sportsman at Royal College those days who played cricket and rugby and excelled in the Banking field before becoming a politician.
T. Alailima the former National athlete who is the main sponsor of Sportsunleash awards ceremony pointed out most of the juniors are neglecting sports after the age of 15 years and this has to change soon and parents have to focus on this change.
The jury headed by co chairmen Dr Harsha Abeykoon and Rear Admiral Dr. Shemal Fernando selected most outstanding school athletes from major sports in Sri Lanka.
Dunith Wellalage of St Joseph's and Viren Nettasinghe the National men's runners up of St Peter's Bambalapitiya were adjudged the most outstanding cricket and badminton players while Nadun Kaveesha Bandara of Royal College and Adhmika Keshan Korala were named most outstanding track and field athletes. Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner Nethmi Ahinsa from Sangaratana MMV Giriulla was the most outstanding wrestler while Hiruni Heshani of HFC Kurunegala who was the Netball junior National queen was adjudged most outstanding Netball player. 16 year old Nalandian Susal de Silva was named most outstanding chess player. Umayanga Pasindu Mihiran of Nalanda who had three A's at the A/ L exam was adjudged most outstanding boxer.
