Three nabbed with Kerala cannabis worth over Rs.16 Mn

The Navy seized over 49 kilogrammes of Kerala cannabis during a special search operation carried out off the Delft Island in Jaffna yesterday.

The operation also led to the apprehension of three suspects along with a dingy. The Navy conducts regular patrols and search operations to prevent various forms of illegal activities at sea.

In a similar operation, SLNS Wasaba in the Northern Naval Command had searched a suspicious dinghy off Delft Island and seized about 20kg and 900g of Kerala cannabis in 09 packages which had been contained in a sack.

Three suspects were arrested and the dinghy used for the smuggling of the drugs was also seized. SLNS Ranavijaya attached to the Northern Naval Command recovered another sack adrift in the waters.

The sack had been thrown into the sea when the suspects detected the Naval presence. Eleven packages of Kerala cannabis weighing around 29kgs were recovered during this operation.

The gross street value of the stock of Kerala cannabis seized in this operation is estimated to be over Rs.16 million. The apprehended suspects between the 25 to 42 age group are residents of Mandaitivu, Veththalakerni and Thalayadi in Jaffna.

The suspects together with the stock of Kerala cannabis and the dinghy will be handed over to the Delft Police for further action.
