CEB Chairman sights shortage of funds, power cuts continue

Although the Human Rights Commission has requested to provide continuous electricity supply until the end of the G.C.E. A/L Examination, the Ceylon Electricity Board is struggling to find the necessary funds needed for that purpose, Electricity Board Chairman Nalinda Ilangakoon said yesterday.

Even though CEB officials had expressed agreement to provide electricity during the examination to the Human Rights Commission, the Human Rights Commission had not informed him in writing so far,” he added.

In order to provide continuous electricity supply during the period of examination, the CEB will have to spend an amount of Rs.4.1 billion additionally from the date of commencement of the examination to the end of the examination.

“Even though we have discussed with the banks to get extra money for the fuel needed for electricity generation during the period of examination, they claim to show us the income received by the CEB to cover the loan amount,”he said.

The Chairman said that CEB has no need to inconvenience its customers. However, it has to interrupt the power during the examination unwillingly due to the difficulty in finding the money needed to get the fuel in the face of the severe financial crisis facing the country at present.
