Transport and Highways Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena has given instructions to bring to the attention of the Cabinet the elevated metro train project which would operate on towers from the Colombo Port City to Negombo.
The company which is going to make the investment presented the details about the proposed construction of 25 railway stations from the Colombo Port City to Negombo.
Accordingly, it has been proposed to carry out the metro rail project from the Colombo Port City to Negombo covering a distance of 41 kilo metres along a road built on pillars.The concerned private company has agreed to invest US$ 2.5 billion for the project without spending money from the Government.
Considering the importance of this beneficial project, which is being carried out without any cost to the Government, the Minister has given instructions to the Ministry officials at the same time to draw the immediate attention of the Government and submit a Cabinet Paper to obtain Cabinet approval for further work and accordingly to take the necessary next steps as soon as possible.
The Minister said that the State Ministry of Investment Promotion and the Transport and Highways Ministry will present the Cabinet Paper as a joint proposal and it will be implemented as a Board of Investment project. Investment Promotion State Minister Dilum Amunugama, Board of Investment representatives and company officials were present.
