The Dehiwala Zoological Garden has received a male Jaguar (Panthera Onca) from the Netherlands under an animal exchange programme with the ‘Best Zoo’ in the Netherlands.

This two and a half months old Jaguar has been airlifted to the country and will be released to the Dehiwala Zoo following a one-month quarantine period, National Zoological Gardens Director General Thilak Premakantha said.

The jaguar calf will be looked after by female jaguar ‘Leyar’ in the Dehiwala Zoo following the quarantine period.

Sri Lanka has granted a couple of giant squirrels to the ‘Best Zoo’ in the Netherlands in lieu of the male Jaguar.
