Rs. 10 billion allocated for Urea purchases for Yala Season

Reserve of 100,000 metric tonnes of urea planned:

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed Ministry officials to allocate Rs.10 billion to purchase urea fertilizer required for paddy and maize cultivation in the coming Yala Season yesterday (1).

Warehouses of Lanka Fertilizer Company and Commercial Fertilizer Companies have 30,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer now. In addition, arrangements have been made to purchase another 25,000 metric tonnes.

In addition to those urea fertilizer stocks, it was decided to allocate this amount of Rs.10 billion to purchase another 25,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer.

The Minister explained that the purpose of this is to provide urea fertilizer needed for paddy cultivation, maize cultivation and other crops in the Yala Season by maintaining a reserve of 100,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer.

The Agriculture Ministry has planned to provide all three types of fertilizers essential for paddy cultivation namely - TSP, MOP and Urea Fertilizer without shortage in the 2023 Yala Season.

Arrangements have been made to provide TSP at the beginning of the Yala Season to all paddy farmers free.The fertilizer ship is scheduled to reach Colombo port by mid February. It has 36,000 metric tonnes of manure.

In addition, there is a surplus of about 35,000 metric tonnes of MOP fertilizer with fertilizer companies. A reserve of about 60,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer will be maintained by the end of this month and with the urea fertilizer to be purchased under the allocated amount of Rs.10 billion, it will be possible to maintain a reserve of nearly 100,000 metric tonnes of urea fertilizer. The Minister said that steps will be taken to provide all the fertilizers required for paddy farming in the 2023 Yala Season.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed officials to begin the related procurement work immediately.
