MEP always for a unitary Sri Lanka - PM

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) will always be committed to secure a unitary Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday (10).

The Prime Minister made this observation joining the debate on the policy statement presented by the President Ranil Wickremesinghe in parliament. PM Gunawardena noted that the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna has always supported an administrative procedure focusing on districts. He noted that a development plan should be implemented centered on a district. He also said that focus on the provincial level was brought by the 13th Amendment. He said that there is a District Act and it is important to take the Act into consideration as well.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the Opposition does not have any solid policy to get the country out of the prevailing crisis and said that it irresponsibly refrained from supporting the 21st amendment, National Council and the 75 Independence celebration. Eventhough the government has a solid plan on facilitating and assisting low income families during this crisis, the opposition has no such plan to address their needs, the Premier also said.

PM Gunawardena also noted that the country is now reaching the final stage of the discussions held with the International Monetary Fund. He also noted that China, India and the Paris Club were extremely supportive of Sri Lanka regarding debt restructuring.

PM Gunawardena also stressed the importance of land utilising for the country as there are thousands of acres not being utilized for any economic activity.

PM Gunawardena also pointed out that despite severe economic hardships, none of the government employees have been forced to lose their jobs. Stressing the importance of a social protection network, the Premier said the government is presently working on the matter.
