IMF never advocated to slash welfare measures - Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) never advocated to slash welfare measures such as Janasaviya and the Mid Day Meal programme that benefits 4.3 million children implemented by former President Ranasinghe Premadasa “The reason for this was due to the correct dealings with the IMF back then.

The sad thing is that today it is not done in that manner,” he said. He was speaking at a rally in Kollonna recently.

The Opposition Leader said that President Ranasinghe Premadasa, who came to power when there was a severe disaster, started welfare processes like Janasaviya and development programmes like garment factories programme. He also said that the electricity bill has been raised so much that the people cannot bear it When all the engines to run a country are inoperative, we should find out exactly what methods can be used to recover the country.
