Thief stealing jewellery to donate money for a Dansala arrested

A 21-year-old youth who stole gold ornaments and mobile phones from many houses in Ingiriya area was arrested by the police yesterday (08).

The individual was arrested for stealing gold ornaments from a house on the Poson poya day when the residents went to out to the temple and dansal on that day.

It is reported that a dansala which was held on the Posn Poya day has received a 40,000 rupee donation from the suspect.

It has been revealed that the suspect, who is a resident of Ingiriya Uragala area, has been abandoned by his parents and has been living with his grandmother while working in a private company in the area. It is also reported that the suspect has been stealing gold ornaments and mobile phones from the houses for about a year.

Police say that the suspect, who is highly addicted to drugs, was in possession of six grams of heroin when he was arrested. The police has stated that stolen gold jewelery worth around Rupees one million from Ingiriya and surrounding areas had been pawned and sold to five jewelery pawnshops in the area.

Arrangements have been made to present the suspect to Horana Magistrate Court
