Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy new Central Bank Governor

Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy has been appointed the new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

In a tweet, a short while ago, President Sirisena said:

‘After consulting all parties relevant, I appointed Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy to head the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.’

Dr. Coomaraswamy received his primary and secondary education at Royal College in Colombo and at Harrow School in England.

He obtained his undergraduate degree at Cambridge and his Doctorate at the University of Sussex.

Joining the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in 1973, he served in the Economic Research, Statistics and Bank Supervision divisions as a staff officer till 1989.

He was attached to the Ministry of Finance and Planning from 1981 to 1989.

He worked thereafter for the Commonwealth Secretariat from 1990–2008, holding the posts of Director, Economic Affairs Division and Deputy-Director, Secretary-General's Office before heading the Social Transformation Programme division, as Interim Director.

He replaces Arjuna Mahendran, whose term at the helm of the Central Bank came to an end on June 30.

Great, it was personal opinion that he should have been appointed ahead of Mahendran.Things have now been corrected. All the best.

Wonder whether he is also a chum of Rajapaksa boys. Can somebody check it please

Dr Indrajith Coomraswamy albeit never sought this or any position should have been appointed before Cabral and Mahendran as apart from brilliant academic achievements second to none, has unquestionable integrity, patriotism and family background of service to Sri Lanka. Also on the sports field he has represented Harrow both in Cricket and Rugger, and Captained both the Sri Lanka and CR & FC Rugby teams. He with his people skills, humility, prior exposure at the CB and Finance Ministry, and after creating nucleus of Minister Malik Samarawickrema's Investment division by his sheer humility and commitment to the country will undoubtedly clean the Augean stables at the Central Bank.

I think it's a good decision by President, selected right person. Let's hope for the best and we want to put the things on track soon.

Humble

A great appointment. I pray that under his stewardship, the Central Bank will go from strength to strength!

The best man for the job. Congratulations Indrajith, I know you will do a fantastic job and more so because you are a honourable, honest and a man of integrity. Best regards to you. Melanie.

Let's not jump into conclusions. Even Mr. Mahendran came with loads of experience & quality background. Let's not disgrace the former Governor without the charges being proved. (I wonder whether it will ever be) Coomaraswamys haven't been that patriotic after all. We remember the time the govt. was battling the UN & the whole world during LTTE time.

I am sure he will do a good job I congratulations Mr Indrajith
