No interference in university activities - Kiriella

Unlike the past, the new government will not interfere with the administration and academic activities of universities, said Universities and Highways Minister Laksman Kiriella.

The minister was addressing Vice Chancellor and Directors of Universities at the University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday. Minister Kiriella said that universities will be able to function with full freedom, since the government or the Minister of Universities would never interfere in their activities.

“On a policy decision of the UNP, no interference into the activities of universities will take place again. University administrators can take their own decisions such as selecting lecturers, utilising funds, addressing issues etc,” he noted.

He further said that the UGC will also provide the legal background to universities to perform as an Independent body. The government will take measures in this regard aiming to provide the necessary legal background for the UGC to perform as an independent commission, he said.“With a view to give full autonomy for the UGC, we added recommendations to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution once it was amended recently. Unfortunately, when in the final draft, that recommendations were removed” he said.
