Former Secretary of the Sri Lanka Judo Association, Gamini Ranasinghe, is optimistic about Rajitha Nuwarapaksha’s chances of becoming the first Sri Lankan judoka to qualify for the Olympics. Nuwarapaksha recently achieved the impressive 128th world ranking, marking a significant milestone for Sri Lanka in judo.
Ranasinghe, who manages Nuwarapaksha, revealed plans to send him to the Grand Slams in Portugal and France in January and early February 2024, respectively. The aim is to improve Nuwarapaksha’s International Judo Federation ranking to below 75, increasing his chances for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Ranasinghe emphasized the importance of securing a direct qualification, as wild cards will no longer be available.
Nuwarapaksha’s dedication to his sport is evident, with Ranasinghe praising his disciplined approach, citing an incident during the Tokyo Grand Slam where Nuwarapaksha adhered strictly to his diet.
Previously ranked at 411, Nuwarapaksha’s ascent to the 128th world ranking is considered a fantastic achievement for Sri Lanka. Currently training in Italy, he is gearing up for the upcoming Grand Slams and Grand Prix in Portugal and France.
Ranasinghe, a former Acting Treasurer for the National Olympic Committee and long-standing Secretary of the Sri Lanka Judo Association, expressed his commitment to elevating the sport of judo in the country. Reflecting on his extensive experience, he highlighted the challenges faced by the association in the past, emphasizing the need for genuine individuals in the sport.
Based in Melbourne, Ranasinghe is determined to guide Nuwarapaksha through the upcoming competitions, with an ultimate focus on qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
