Galle, Akmeemana and Habaraduwa people demand drinking water

A large gathering of people from Akmeemana, Galle, Habaraduwa and Imaduwa Divisional Secretariat areas staged a protest in front of the Galle District Secretariat yesterday, while the Galle District Coordinating Committee meeting was in progress, demanding the provision of drinking water.

Southern Provincial Councilor Nalin Hewage who joined the protestors alleged authorities had failed to extend water supply lines to the areas for as long as ten years.

"People have demanded a supply of drinking water for their areas the past ten years, but authorities have not constructed even one extra water tank during this period," he said.

Co-chairperson of Galle DCC, district parliamentarian Wijepala Hettiarachchi also met with and spoke to the protestors.

He admitted the grievances and charges of the protesters and promised swift action would be taken to rectify the situation, after consultation with the respective officials.

Protestors who continued their demonstration for about one hour dispersed peacefully on the assurance given by the parliamentarian.
