The number of pilgrims to Kataragama has increased considerably now since they can arrive in Kataragama easily along the Southern Expressway after it was extended to Hambantota and Mattala recently.

About 15,000 pilgrims have visited Kataragama on the last weekends, Kataragama Maha Devalaya Basnayake Nilame Dilruwan Rajapaksa said.

Many of them have reached Mattala from Colombo in three hours. They said they save money and time by travelling along the Southern Expressway to Kataragama.

However, pilgrims said they do not get suitable resting places along the Southern Expressway. They said that a few resting places should be set up along the road to make the trip joyful and more comfortable.

The number of vegetable and fruit traders on either side of the Lunugamvehera and Tanamalwila Roads has been increased now in the aftermath of the expressway extension, sources said.
