No additional charges for power bills

Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday that electricity bills will be calculated only taking into the consideration the number of units used and no additional charges will be added to the bills.

He further said that there is no decision for any power cuts, power failures or rate hikes in the face of the current situation.

Minister Amaraweera said that consumers do not need to panic of having to pay a large amount of money at once when they receive electricity bills of previous two-three months together.

Since consumers are unable to pay electricity bills due to the prevailing COVID 19 situation in the country, the Minister has advised the CEB to ensure that consumers will not face disconnection or receiving red bills.

A mechanism will be created allowing consumers in curfew relaxed areas to pay their electricity bills on an installment basis and sufficient time period will be given for them to settle the bills. However, the Power and Energy Ministry requests the public to settle the bills as soon as they receive their electricity bills.
