Gavesh Gimhana a promising athlete

Nineteen year old Athletic Coloursman Marasinghe Arachchige Gavesh Gimhana brought honour and fame to his Alma Mater Dhammissara National School Nattandiya in athletics.

Gavesh was admitted to Dhammissara National School in 2008 when R. K. W. Gunasekera was the Principal and his first class teacher was Mrs. Piyumali. In 2016 he commenced Athletics under Keerthi Jayasekera in the under 16 age group and in the same year at the Schools Sports Meet he came second in 200 and 400 metres and in 2017 he won the under 16 age group and he came first in 200 and 400 metres and in the Divisional and Zonal Meets he won his events and in the Provincial in 800 metres he won a Silver Medal.

In the under 18 age category he was the School Champion by becoming first in 400, 800 and 1500 metres and in the Divisional he was the Champion and in the Provincial Meet he came second in 800 and 1500 Metres. Same year in the All Island Schools Meet he came sixth in 800 metres with qualifying time and in the same year in the John Tarbet Meet he came fourth and got colours. In 2019 in the under 18 age group he came second in 800 and 1500 metres and in the All Island Schools Meet he came to the Best Eight and won colours.

In the Junior Nationals he came third in 1500 and fifth in 800 metres. In 2020 he was the School Champion by winning 400, 800 and 1500 and he was awarded school colours and the Best Athlete of the year. He won the Divisional Meet in the under 20 age group in his events and could not go further due to Covid 19. During his practice sessions his team mates Salith Subash and Nevidu were helping in many ways and Gavesh is in the Sri Lanka under 20 National Pool and his coach and Master in Charge is Jude Chinthaka and the Principal and School Authorities are very supportive of him
