Cardinal says ashamed of former President

‘No right to seek public office again’

urges immediate legal action

Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith yesterday questioned as to how a former President is planning to contest an election after acting in an irresponsible manner.

“There is information that a former President is going to contest the elections. We are ashamed of that. I would like to ask how he is going to contest the election with his clothes on. How could it be possible for him to contest again and become a Party Leader after acting irresponsibly once,” the Archbishop questioned.

The Archbishop requested the Government to take legal action against former President Maithripala Sirisena as recommended by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Attacks (Easter PCoI).

He also noted that the Commission Report has named the former President as being responsible for the attack by way of neglecting intelligence information and security measures. Hence there is no need to delay the process of taking legal action. “He should go home and mind his own business.”

He urged the Government to implement the recommendations of the Easter PCoI without any undue delay. The Colombo Archbishop was speaking to the media following the Easter Sunday morning mass held at the St.Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena yesterday.

The second anniversary of the 2019 Easter Sunday carnage falls on April 21 this year and the Archbishop stressed that they would seek justice by demonstrating on the streets on behalf of the victims and their families if the recommendations are not implemented before April 21, 2021.

The victims of the attack were remembered at the churches which were subjected to the attacks, including St. Anthony’s Kochchikade and the Katuwapitiya Church. Floral tributes were also offered to the monument dedicated for the victims of the deadly Easter attacks on the Churches and hotels and guesthouses.
