More than 100 Police officers have been deployed in Galle city to ensure the safety of New Year shoppers, Galle Division DIG Nuwan Wedasinghe said.
"Uniformed and plain clothes Police officers have been deployed for the protection and safety of the shoppers. A large number of people from rural areas come to Galle and Ambalangoda to buy clothes and other items," the DIG Wedasinghe said.
He said that about 70 Police officers have been deployed in Ambalangoda town and officers from other Police stations have also been called in for special duties during the festive season.
"Shops around Galle and the Ambalangoda areas are bustling with activity and there is great enthusiasm among the people to celebrate the New Year. A special security arrangement has been implemented for the safety of the consumers including their vehicles. Officers who have been briefed about the activities of registered criminals have also been deployed while special units of Police officers on beat patrol and push cycles will also be ready at ahand. The public is requested to wear masks and follow the safety procedures, such as refraining from gathering in large crowds when doing their New Year shopping," the DIG further stated.
