Special public transport service for Sinhala and Tamil New Year

Western Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority Chairman Prasanna Sanjeewa said that special public transport services would be launched in collaboration with the Railway Department, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), and the Transport Commission for people traveling to rural areas for the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year. He added that steps would be taken to deploy buses based on the requirement.

The SLTB stated that it has deployed an additional 200 buses for people to travel to villages for the holidays. The Railway Department stated that 21 special trains have been deployed for both short-distance and long-distance journeys. They will be in operation from April 9.

Special bus services and trains services will function to provide transport for the people who are visiting hometowns during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) will allocate 1,102 additional busses from April 9 to April 16 in this regard.

Twelve additional bus journeys will be operated to Badulla, 10 to Matara, eight to Galle, six to Jaffna and one to Anuradhapura.

The SLTB employees have been requested to provide uninterrupted service to the commuters. Private buses have also increased their turns up to 1,800 to all areas around Colombo and Homagama.

The Railway Department will implement an additional 21 train journeys from April 9.

Transport State Minister Dilum Amunugama said that raids will be conducted to nab errant bus operators who overcharge passengers during the season.

He said it is necessary to adhere to health guidelines when using the public transport.
