Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has appointed a committee consisting of seven senior MPs to look into the tense situation that occurred in the Chamber and in the Parliament premises last Wednesday (21).
The committee, which was appointed yesterday (22), will inquire into the clashes between MPs representing both the Government and the Opposition that took place in the Chamber and the case of assaulting an MP at the parliament premises yesterday (21), Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced.
The Speaker further stated that the future course of action regarding the MPs involved in both incidents will be decided on the recommendations received from the committee.
The Speaker pointed out that yesterday’s incidents was shameful and should not happen again.
Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena raising a Point of Order on the incidents that took place in Parliament yesterday during the commemoration of Easter Sunday terror attacks, pointed out that proper action should be taken against those who are involved in, to safeguard the reputation of the legislature.
