Over 740 prisoners COVID-19 positive islandwide

The total number of COVID-19 infections recorded from the prisons islandwide has increased to 745 with the identification of over 100 coronavirus cases from prisons in the Southern Province, according to a COVID-19 report released by the Provincial Health Department.

On May 23, 60 detainees from the Boossa Prison and 40 detainees from Angunakolapelessa Prison were diagnosed with COVID-19. So far, 324 inmates from the Boossa Prison, 236 from Angunakolapelessa Prison, 55 from Galle Prison, 50 from Weerawila Prison, 18 from Tissa Prison, 31 from Matara Prison and four from Hambantota Prison and 27 others have been identified as COVID-19 positive cases.

According to the report, 30 staff members of provincial hospitals were diagnosed with COVID-19 on May 23. Seven staff members from the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, nine from the Balapitiya Hospital, four from the Elpitiya Hospital, three from the Kamburupitiya Hospital, one from the Deniyaya Hospital, three from the Tangalle Hospital and three from the Hambantota Hospital have been identified as COVID-19 positive.

At the Medical Officer of Health Divisional level, 113 cases from the Galle District, 169 cases from the Matara District and 67 cases from the Hambantota District were newly identified on May 23.

At present 176,645 PCR tests have been conducted in the province and 19,933 persons belonging to 7,824 families have been placed under self-quarantine.
