Batticaloa PHIs angry over abuse, suspect arrested

Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) attached to14 MOH divisions in the Batticaloa district decided not to engage in COVID preventive programmes owing to a dispute in Arayampathy yesterday (1).

A female garment factory employee found COVID-19 positive had been visited by the PHI in the Arayampathy area for the pasting of the isolation notice. An associate of the female victim had insulted and verbally abused and threatened the PHI who went to discharge his duty.

After making a complaint to the Police the PHI along with his colleagues in the other 13 divisions decided to abstain from COVID-19 preventive work but performed their normal duties until the person concerned was arrested and inquired into.

The Batticaloa Police Crime Bureau had arrested the suspect alleged to have insulted the PHI. The Batticaloa Police said the suspect will be produced in the Batticaloa Courts today (2).
