Naval personnel repaired four inoperative sluice gates of the Inginimitiya Reservoir in Puttalam between May 24 and 28, the Navy stated in a communiqué. Due to a fault in the lifting mechanism of the sluice gates of the Inginimitiya Reservoir, the distribution of drinking water and supply of water to 6,539 acres of land, including that to 4,600 acres of new lands acquired for this year’s Yala and Maha Seasons, had been at a standstill.

Responding to a request made by the Department of Irrigation, a team of Navy divers attached to the Northwestern Naval Command was deployed to the premises on May 24, the statement said.

After four days of underwater operations, the Navy team repaired the sluice gates’ lifting cables, which had been damaged at the bottom.
