MP requests Govt. to bear COVID-19 cremation costs

Wanni District Tamil National Alliance Member of Parliament Selvam Adaikkalanadan has written to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa asking him to consider granting relief to relatives of persons who have died as a result of the Coronavirus in Vavuniya, Mannar and Mullaitivu as the Vavuniya Municipal Council is charging exorbitant amounts for the cremation of COVID-19 bodies which these families have no way of paying.

The Parliamentarian has mentioned in his letter sent to the Prime Minister that the only crematorium available for all three areas of Vavuniya, Mannar and Mullaitivu is the one located at Poonthottam, Vavuniya. Bodies of those who die from COVID-19 in these three districts are all brought to this crematorium which is under the control of the Vavuniya Municipal Council.

He had also said in the letter that poor people living in the Wanni province are unable to pay the large amount of money the Vavuniya Municipal Council charges for cremations.

Member of Parliament Selvam Adaikkalanadan who said that at present, money for cremations of COVID-19 victims in the area are being paid for by using money collected from organizations and people of the province, requests in his letter sent to the Prime Minister that a recommendation be made that the cremation charges for persons who die from COVID-19 be the same across the entire country and to take steps to ensure that those charges are paid for either by the Government or the Corona Fund.
