No need of compensation to run country – State Minister Shehan

State Minister Shehan Semasinghe yesterday said that the Government does not run the country with the funds from compensation for damages caused by the ships or flights to the country.

He said the Opposition should not make statements regarding obtaining compensations as such statements put the country into disrepute.

He was speaking to the media on Saturday.

The State Minister said that an assessment on the environmental pollution caused by the Xpress Pearl Vessel is being carried out and steps will be taken to obtain compensation in due course.

The government is ready to spend USD 300 million to vaccinate the entire eligible population and therefore, it is not targetting such a compensation, the State Minister said.
