According to the latest update from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), at least 17 people have died, while 271,110 individuals belonging to 67,613 families in 10 districts have been affected by severe weather conditions that prevailed in the country during the last few days.

Moreover, the DMC stated that five persons have been injured, and two persons are still reported to be missing. Seventeen houses have been fully damaged, and 978 houses have been partially damaged, mainly in Ratnapura and Gampaha districts.

A total of 26,806 individuals from 6,177 families have been adversely affected and evacuated to 106 safety centres to provide relief to the displaced. Most of these safety centres are placed in Colombo (51), Gampaha (18), Ratnapura (11), Kalutara (10) districts.

A total of 22, 975 from 5,710 are residing with relatives or friends. “People in Gampaha, Ratnapura, Colombo, Puttalam, Kalutara, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, Kandy, Kurunegala and Galle districts have been affected by heavy rains, floods and landslides and winds. Accordingly, a total of 88 Divisional Secretariat Divisions are affected by the severe weather conditions,” the DMC said.

Furthermore, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya districts. The NBRO has requested the people living in these high-risk areas to move to safer places.

Level 3 Evacuation Alerts have been issued to Matugama, Palindanuwara, Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya and Agalawatta in Kalutara district, Kegalle, Deraniyagala, Warakapola, Ruwanwella, Galigamuwa, Mawanella, Rambukkana, Bulathkohupitiya, Yatiyantota, Dehiowita and Aranayaka in Kegalle district, Eheliyagoda, Kalawana, Ayagama and Kiriella in Ratnapura district and Ambagamuwa in Nuwara Eliya district.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology forecast heavy falls of about 50mm in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya and Kandy districts. Mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere.
