All exams will be held as scheduled – State Minister Premajayantha

Education Reforms State Minister Susil Premajayantha assured that Scholarship Examination, Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examinations will be held this year without fail despite the COVID 19 pandemic.

He added that with the spread of the third wave of COVID-19 virus in the country, the education sector is facing a serious challenge.

The State Minister made these observations during the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) press conference held in Colombo yesterday.

“We were able to hold last year’s Scholarship Examination, Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations later,” State Minister Premajayantha said. “We hope to hold examinations on time this year as well.”

We have seen in the media that children in difficult areas face big problems due to distance education. But this is not a problem of education but a lack of infrastructure. According to the Department of Census and Statistics, only 22 percent of Sri Lanka’s population has access to the Internet. But 90 percent can be covered by TV. Therefore, as a solution to this, action was taken to provide the ‘Guru Gedara’ education program to the students through Channel Eye of SLRC.

“At present a program to provide text books and activities related to the syllabus to the children staying at home is being discussed with the relevant authorities. The programme is expected to be implemented by August. We hope to continue this program even after the commencement of schools. Under the current circumstances, we hope to provide education to children online and on television, and we hope to improve the infrastructure in the near future,” he said.
