Benildus set a national long jump record in 1996

Benildus Fernando came into the limelight in 1987 by winning the national long jump title with a performance of 7.13m and he retained it in the following year with an effort of 7.29m.

He then won a Bronze Medal at the Asian Junior Track and Field Meet with an outstanding performance of 7.33m.

He won the national title in 1993 (7.62m), 1995 (7.75m) and set a new Sri Lanka record in 1996 with a fine performance of 7.84m.

Benildus won the Bronze Medal at the 1989 South Asian Federation Games (SAF) in Islamabad, Pakistan with an effort of 7.48m.

He won another Bronze Medal at the 1991 SAF Games in Colombo with a performance of 7.30m.

Benildus won the Gold Medal at the Dhaka SAG in 1993 while producing a fine performance of 7.42m.

He won the Gold Medal once again at the 1995 Madras SAG with an effort of 7.69m. Benildus had the honour of representing Sri Lanka at the 1988 Asian Games in Seoul, South Korea and at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. (C.D)
