Pre-school teachers now can breathe ‘sigh of relief’ – State Minister Piyal

The Government has created an environment where pre-school teachers who were in a desperate situation could breathe a sigh of relief, Preschools and Primary Education State Minister Piyal Nishantha said.

He was speaking at a press conference in Battaramulla yesterday.

“During his tenure, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had decided to provide an allowance of Rs. 2,500 to increase the economic strength of pre-school teachers. However, after the Yahapalana government came to power, the allowance was reduced to Rs.250,: he added.

“However, the Government has decided to increase the allowance from Rs.250 to Rs.2, 500 and made arrangements to provide it to pre-school teachers as Guru Abhimani Allowance from June 1. It will be provided on June 17 at 10.30 am under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees,” he said.

“Five Pre-Schools will be set up as ‘Pre-Schools of Prosperity’ in each district by December this year. The Ministry has decided to spend Rs.2.5 million for each of these pre-schools. The Ministry has also allocated Rs.600, 000 to each pre-school for the development of infrastructure facilities. All of this is expected to be delivered at the event on June 17 under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. With a view to the hygiene of pre-school children, sanitary equipment has been provided to cover all pre-schools in the 21 districts,” he added.

“We have formulated a National Policy to streamline the pre-school system and will present the National Policy to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the ceremony,” he said.
