Eco-friendly helmet from local private company

Coir Creations, a local private company, has produced an eco-friendly helmet along with many other remarkable coir productions.

This helmet and coir productions are more environmentally friendly and safer than the imported helmets being used in the country. It is being produced using 100 per cent coconut coir fiber.

The officials from the Coir Creations presented their productions to Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at the Ministry yesterday on June 9. Managing Director C.S. . Gamage, Team Leader N. Kavya and others were present.

Safety helmets made from coir fiber are healthier than the other plastics and synthetic helmets . Especially absorbing sunlight, easy to wash and clean, light weight, no discomfort to the head even in dry weather, no damage from ultraviolet rays, no odour like other helmets, the coir fiber helmets are natural and Eco-friendly and will decompose quickly after release into the environment, the officials said.

The Minister said that the policy of the Government is to produce as much as we want in our country. He said that innovations such as these should be introduced to save financial situation in our country.

The company also manufactures Corrugated Coir Fiber Roofing Sheets. This roofing sheets are suitable to use as an alternative for the asbestos roofing sheets. It is also a very eco-friendly product. The Minister said that the new laws will be enacted from this year, especially to control the application of asbestos sheets to roofs for newly build schools and pre- schools.

They have also introduced a number of oil-absorbing products that can be used to prevent water contamination in water-based oil spills. The Minister was introduced to a coir rope (Anaconda Rope) and a fuel suction device to prevent any possible environmental damage in the event of a fuel leak from the sunken Express Pearl.

The Minister said that steps will be taken to ban asbestos for schools and pre-schools from this year. He said that it is the responsibility of the Government to encourage local industrialists and encourage the public to buy their products.
