Tharushi Rajakaruna a talented women’s cricketer

Nineteen year old Tharushi Rajakaruna, a grade 13 student of Nugawela National School is a talented women’s cricketer and she started her cricket career at the age of twelve years and her Cricket Coach is S.Jaliya. She is a right hand batswoman and a right arm off-spinner and she was selected to the School Cricket team under the captaincy of Madara Samarakoon in the year 2015.

They came up-to Quarter finals at the all Island Schools tournament in 2015/16 and Tharushi captured 10 wickets and made40 runs which was her highest score at that time but she proved her talent as an all-rounder when she was selected to the Kandy District School team under the coaching of Amila Pinnaduwa, the Provincial Cricket Coach and Ananda Bandaranayake,the District Cricket coach. They spotted her talent in cricket and Tharushi was included in the Development Squad in 2018 and immediately she proved her class by capturing 4 for 21 against Dambulla Cricket Club representing the Kandy District Side at the Inter Provincial Tournament.

In the following year in 2019 she took another step forward as a batswoman to score 49 runs against Nuwara-Eliya District at the Inter District Cricket tournament. and in the year 2020 she notched up her first century when she scored 101 runs against Nuwara-Eliya District at the Inter District Women’s Cricket Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Womens’ Cricket Association.

This year, she bagged three wickets for 13 runs against St.Anthony’s Girls School, Katugastota at the all Island Girls’ Cricket Tournament. In the last match against Jayasiripura Junior School,Bakamuna she scored 31 runs and helped her school to win the match.

She gave an all-round performance at this Cricket tournament as she was determined to play well as she wants to improve her Cricketing standard Tharushi is thankful to her Cricket Coaches, Amila Pinnaduwa and Ananda Bandaranayake for the encouragement given to her as well as to her father Hiran Rajakaruna too for the instructions given to her to improve cricket as her father captained the Cricket team of St.Sylvesters’ College,Kandy. Her intention is to be a talented cricketer in future and to play for the Sri Lanka Women’s National Team.
