Four including former Maldivian State Minister arrested

According to Maldivian media reports, the Sri Lanka Police and the Maldives Embassy in Sri Lanka have confirmed that the Maldivian arrested in connection with the incident pertaining to the sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old child in Sri Lanka, is a former State Minister of Finance in the Maldives.

The 45-year-old Maldivian politician, Mohamed Ashmalee, is currently in Police custody.

Ashmalee, along with the other three suspects, were remanded until July 16 and were ordered to be produced for an identification parade on the same day.

Another four persons, including another Maldivian national have been arrested on Sunday in connection with the online trafficking of a 15-year-old girl.

Investigations have revealed that the girl had been advertised on four other websites.

Among those arrested were two people from a website who advertised the girl for prostitution, a Maldivian national who took the girl for money, and the manager of the hotel that provided the room for that person.

So far 32 persons, including the girl’s mother, have been arrested in connection with the incident, said Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana.

The Police Media Spokesman stated that two persons had been arrested previously as well for advertising the girl on their websites.

The police spokesman said that another 12 people have been identified in connection with the incident and they will be arrested soon.

The Mount Lavinia Police had initially commenced investigations into the incident on June 07 and the CID and the Women and Children’s Bureau are also cooperating in the investigation.
