Archaeological Department unearths ruins of Pabbata Chaitya

The Archaeological Department has unearthed the ruins of a Pabbata Chaitya believed to be from the early Anuradhapura period at the Veherabediyaya Temple in Galewela. However, further excavation work has been postponed due to the pandemic.

Twenty-two such constructions have been found in the island, the temple’s Chief Incumbent, Ven. Debawa Gunarathana Thera, stated.

The ruins are spread over an area of about 15 acres, while most of the land is used for cultivation. It is believed that more such ruins remain hidden underground, he added.
