Sachithra Herath a cricketing star in the making

Fourteen year old, Sachithra Bandara Herath is a Grade Ten student of Dharmaraja College,Kandy who started schooling from the Grade One class onwards and started his cricket career in the year 2013 at the Junior Cricket Academy of the College under the coaching of Ananda Wijesekera and further practiced under the coaching of Harold Ranasinghe, Asitha Thilakasiri, Gamini Debahapuwa and Upesh Wijesiri, who were past cricket captains of Dharmaraja.

Sachitra learnt the basics of the game from the above coaches for more than three years and in the year 2017 he got an opportunity to play as an All-rounder for the Under 13 cricket team of the School and showed immediate success at the under 13 Division two cricket tournament to score 25 runs against Wickremasheela MV, Giriulla and bagged three wickets for 30 runs against Vidyartha College, Kandy.

In the year 2018 he showed much improvement in his performances and represented the under 13 ‘A’ cricket Team under the captaincy of Kumuditha Bandara and Sachithra scored 33 runs and his best feat in bowling was claiming 5 wickets for 12 runs against Ranabima Royal College,Gannoruwa.

In the year 2019 he showed his consistency as an all-rounder to score 120 Runs in five matches, his highest being 40 not out against St. Annes’ College, Kurunegala. His best bowling feat was claiming 4 wickets for 21 runs against Trinity College,Kandy. In 2020 he started playing for the Under 15 cricket team and showed some outstanding performances as an all-rounder in a match against Kandy Cricket Academy to score an unbeaten knock of 40 Runs and bagged three wickets for 30 runs helping his team to beat the Junior team of the Kandy Cricket Academy.

His School Cricket team could not continue playing matches due to Covid pandemic and when it becomes normal he is hoping to improve his cricket ability more to come up-to National Level as well as to continue his studies and enter the University.

His favourite cricketers in the National team are Rangana Herath and Wanidu Hasaranga. He is grateful to all his cricket coaches and his father Asitha Bandara Herath who is an old boy of Dharmaraja and his mother Harshini for the encouragement given to him to improve Cricket.
