Two protests were held in Nawalapitiya and Hatton yesterday demanding that those involved in the death of a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly burnt to death while working as a servant at the MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s residence, be given the maximum punishment regardless of their status.

Representatives of estate workers at the Fifth Division of the Nawalapitiya Catabula Estate and several Women’s Organisations in Hatton also held a protest.

The protesters started marching from the tea factory at the Katabulawa Estate in Nawalapitiya and proceeded to the Hindu Kovil in the estate for a pooja. They said that the responsible parties should take immediate action to eradicate violence against women.
