Five people, 14 elephants dead in past months

Galgamuwa Coordinating Committee Chairman Asanka Navarathna said that five people and 14 elephants have died in the human-elephant conflict during the past few months. Moreover, he added that 42 properties have also been destroyed.

The Committee Chairman was speaking at a meeting with farmers in Moragollagama, last weekend. Navarathna added that the Wildlife Conservation Department alone would not be able to bring the situation under control by maintaining the electric fence set up in the area.

Therefore, he added that a pilot project would be launched to deploy ‘voluntary forces’ to aid in their work. The group would comprise of officials from Divisional Secretariats, Agrarian Services Departments, the Mahaweli Authority, and other organizations.
