Vihara the netball star of Girls’ High School

Seventeen year old Vihara Marasinghe, a Grade 12 student of Girls’ High School, Kandy who is studying in the G.C.E(A/L)class in the commerce stream is an outstanding Netball Player of the School. She was in the Netball team from the under 13 level and she Is a member of the School team for the last Eight years under the coaching of Suvini de Alwis, former Sri Lanka Women’s Cricketer and the former teacher-in-charge of Netball Thanuja Gunasinghe and the present teacher-in-charge Priyani Dissanayake.

In the year 2015 Vihara became the Captain of the Under 13 Netball team and the other outstanding players of her team were Charuka Kaduwela, Nilmini Thilakaratne, and Mahesha Bandara to name a few and Vihara played as the Centre of the team. In the under 13 level the Netball team obtained the National Level ‘Best Eight’ position In the year 2016. In the year 2017 they became Champions under the captaincy of Dulmini Thilakaratne beating Hillwood College, Kandy in the finals at the Provincial Netball tournament. In the year 2018/19 they became Runners-up at the same tournament and became second runners-up at the ‘Pesta Bola Jaring’ Malaysian Netball championship held in Malaysia in the year 2017 and they toured under the captaincy of Dulmini Thilakaratne.

Vihara received the School colours for Netball and was the Vice-Captain of the School Netball Team in the year 2020 and the captain of the particular team was Sanjeewani Bandara. Vihara is the School Senior Prefect for the year 2020/21, House captain of Langden House, President of the English Debating society of the School in the year 2019/20 and with the support of the debating team initiated the Samuel Langdon Memorial debate with the guidance of the former teacher-in-charge, Sumudu Dhanapala of the School.

Vihara is thankful to the Netball coach, the Principal and Staff and her parents for the encouragement and guidance given to her to come to this position. Her ambition is to become a National player and to do studies at the highest level.
