The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) today raided a warehouse in Kerawalapitiya, Wattala where over 4,100 metric tonnes of sugar had been hidden.
According to Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, the owners of the warehouse have been informed to submit the warehouse registration documents to the CAA to ascertain whether they have legal right to store sugar in the warehouse.
The State Minister said legal action would be taken against the owners if the warehouse has not been registered with the CAA.
The CAA has started a special operation to search for unregistered sugar warehouses on information that many importers have hidden their stocks with the increase of sugar prices.
The CAA will conduct more raids within the Western Province continuously and action will be taken against the culprits without any hesitation, the State Minister further added.
