The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) seized over 20,000 kilogrammes of expired wheat flour hidden in a warehouse on Horowpathana Road in Vavuniya. According to the CAA, the owners of the warehouse were planning to release the flour to the retail market shortly. On raiding the warehouse, CAA officials had found that both the price and expiry date of the wheat flour had been changed.

Currently, there is a shortage of wheat flour at the wholesale outlets in Vavuniya. Bakery owners in Vavuniya have informed the Consumer Affairs Authority that it is not possible to run their businesses in this situation.

The CAA said due to the flour shortage, unscrupulous businessmen were taking advantage of the situation and selling wheat flour unfit for human consumption at higher prices.

Statements have been obtained from four persons regarding the incident and officials of the Vavuniya office of the Consumer Affairs Authority are conducting investigations.
