Different avenues being sought to produce organic fertilizer - Minister Ramesh

Different avenues are being sought to produce organic fertilizer and import certain nutrients for the agriculture sector, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said.

The Minister was responding to a journalist with regard to the tea industry at the Cabinet media briefing yesterday at the Government Information Department.

Minister Pathirana said that Sri Lankan Tea is the most expensive in the world. "We are getting about 4.4 - 4.5 dollars per kg. It is much more expensive than tea in India and Kenya. The country has not experienced a significant drop in tea production," he said.

Sri Lanka averagely produced 26 million kilos of tea. It is higher than the tea production of the same month in the last year, he said.

"During the first six months of the year, we produced 162 million kilos of tea. It is above the average. We had very good climatic conditions. We also had enough fertilizer. We are closely monitoring the situation and we notice a reduction in tea production in September and October, due to drought and other climatic conditions," he added.
