Akash Gardiyawasam - a fine all-round cricketer

Twenty-year-old Akash Gardiyawasam is a fine all-round cricketer having represented Sri Rahula College, Katugastota with distinction.

He is a right-arm leg-spinner and a right-arm batsman as well as a solid fielder at any position.

In 2015 he came out with a fine all-round performance as Captain of the team to score 116 against Nugawela Central and took a matchbag of 12 wickets for 68 runs against the same opponents.

In the 2016 season, he scored 610 runs claiming 53 wickets in 10 matches and his highest score was 55 runs against Wayamba Royal College,

Kurunegala and the best bowling figures were seven wickets for 10 runs against Watawana College, Chilaw.

In 2017 he played only in five matches for the Under-17 team and scored a total of 170 runs and bagged 20 wickets. In 2018, he represented the Kandy District team and scored 92 runs against the visiting Australia Junior cricket team at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy.

In the 2018/19 season he represented the Under-19 Kandy Cricket Academy team and scored 400 runs in eight matches.

His highest score was 52 runs and also bagged seven wickets for 35 runs against Kegalle Vidyalaya.

In the 2019 Big Match against Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya, Kandy he bagged three wickets for 37 runs in the limited overs match.

He showed his class in bowling by claiming seven wickets for 20 against Madawala Cricket Club in the Division Three Cricket Tournament.

He was appointed Captain of the Under-19 team but could not play for the full season due to the present situation in the country.
