Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that two government fertilizer companies have been given permission to import organic fertilizer for all crops including tea, rubber and coconuts.
The Minister was addressing the media in Kurunegala yesterday.
Earlier, organic fertilizer was imported only for paddy cultivation.
“Farmers can buy organic fertilizer for all crops from the open market without any shortage from next month. The private sector, too, will be allowed to import organic fertilizer in the near future,” Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said.
The farmers will be provided with organic fertilizer free as well, he added. The farmers will also receive free fertilizer of 300 kg of Nitrogen and 45 kg of Potassium per hectare, the Minister added.
Organic fertilizer is produced here for paddy cultivation. Organic nitrogen and potassium have also been imported adequately now, the Minister added.
