Colombo Transport Network Project progress reviewed

A special meeting was held to review the progress of the Transport Network Development Project of the Greater Colombo area led by Transport Minister Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi at the Transport Ministry recently.

It was revealed at the meeting that over six lakhs of vehicles and 19 lakhs of people enter the Greater Colombo area daily causing a severe a traffic jam and air and sound pollution on a normal day.

Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that a more comfortable and sustainable transport system should be set up and added to the transport field as per the President's National Policy Framework. The Minister, therefore, instructed the Transport Ministry Officials to set up Multipurpose Transport Centres in Colombo and suburbs and to pay more attention to minimise Carbon emissions.

The Minister also instructed the Project Director and the Ministry Secretary to prepare a proposal to find out the cost for the project through foreign funds.

Transport Ministry Secretary Monti Ranatunga, Additional Secretary Bernard Wasantha, Project Director Nalaka Dissanayake, Project Manager (Planning ) Dr. Kalyani Dias, Director General (Technical) Dilantha Fernando and several other Ministry Officials participated.
