Batticaloa has not attracted tourists in the past but after the lockdown and other travel restrictions, the town has gained its beauty again. We have a responsibility to preserve it. Buildings along the lagoon bank have spoilt its beauty, especially at the Urani Junction along the Batticaloa-Kalmunai Highway, Parliamentarian and Batticaloa District Development Committee Coordinating Chairman Sivanesadurai Chandrakanthan said.

He was speaking under the theme “Build the Nation towards the Prosperity”. Under this theme, 100 towns in Sri Lanka will be beautified at a cost of Rs. 17.38 million funded by the Urban Development Authority. A walkway will be constructed from the Urani Junction up to the Batticaloa Airport as well.

Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal Party (TMVP) Secretary P.Prasanthan, Eastern Province Urban Development Authority Director Jagath Liyanage, District Director of Planning Sashikala Punniyamoorthy, Manmunai North Divisional Secretary V.Vasidevan and Batticaloa Municipal Commissioner Manikkavasager Thayaparan were present.

He said that the President had to face many challenges such as COVID-19, unemployment, poverty and other economic issues. You might ask why a project to beautify towns was launched at this time. We as representatives of the Government have to fulfill the needs of the people. We cannot wait until the pandemic is over to develop the country, he said.

He said that blaming the Government and complaining against the Government to the international community has become the habit of the Opposition. We as responsible representatives of the people have to take measures to uplift the living standards of the people,” he said.
