Sri Lanka white-ball Captain Dasun Shanaka welcomed the appointment of Mahela Jayawardene as Consultant for the first-round of the ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“I believe it is a huge advantage for us to have a coach in the calibre of Mahela Jayawardene. No other coach in Sri Lanka has the amount of experience that Mahela possesses at this moment,” Shanaka said before departing to Oman.

“The other advantage is that Mahela is already in the UAE coaching the Mumbai Indian side in the Indian Premier League,” Shanaka elaborated.

“So, as a team I think we will be able to get a great amount of backing from Mahela and his services will be of great value for us ahead of the World Cup,” Shanaka added.

Jayawardene will share his vast experience and provide invaluable strategic support for the players and management team during a 7-day period from October 16-23 when the team will play Namibia, Ireland, and the Netherlands as they seek to qualify for the Group Stages.

Sri Lanka is to play Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea in the official warm-up games ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, which starts on 17th October.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s two official warm-up games, organised by the ICC will be played on October 12 against Bangladesh and on October 14 against Papua New Guinea. Sri Lanka will start their World Cup campaign in the first-round – Group ‘A’ against Namibia on October 18 followed by games against Ireland (20) and Netherlands (22).
