Kandy Schools to resume cricket

All cricket playing schools in Kandy, Vidyartha College, Trinity College, Sri Rahula College, Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College, St. Sylvester’s College, St..Anthony’s College, Dharmaraja College, Kingswood College, are to commence training with all health guidelines. School cricket was brought to a halt in Kandy - due to Corona virus. All the much awaited traditional inter school matches and the big matches were halted. Cricket lovers are ready to welcome the game back

The fans, schools and parents are all out to support the players. So the young guy are sure to play good cricket.

Over here in the central hills, Sri Rahula College at one time was well known for cricket and even today they are a major force having produced Sri Lanka player Asela Gunaratne. They are one of Kandy’s oldest cricket playing schools having first taken to it in the 1890s but gave it up a few years later and in the 1970s they came back into cricket.

Sri Sumangala College earlier known as St. Paul’s College, first played cricket in the early days and later gave up, returned to the fray even without a home ground they have already produced a national player in paceman Lahiru Kumara.

Vidyartha College is also one of the leading schools in the hill capital and has produced some top class cricketers and has emerged as one of the leading cricket playing schools.They have been playing cricket since 1952.

St. Sylvester’s College is a school located in the middle of the Kandy city continues to produce good cricketers.In 1994 for the first time they won the All-Island League championship and in the knockouts lost in the semi-finals. Trinity College, a school which is blessed with all facilities and produced top class talented cricketers including cricketing legend Kumar Sangakkara and Niroshan Dickwella is one of the oldest cricket playing schools in the country. Before the Second World War, they not only produced several top class cricketers but also produced several invincible teams.

St. Anthony’s College, at one time were a major force in school cricket. They have not only produced several champion teams but also produced some of the finest cricketers who have made Sri Lanka proud with one of them being the world record holder Muttiah Muralitharan. and also Ruwan Kalpage Piyal Wijetunge and Mahesh Gunatilleke Dharmaraja College is a school which has a history of more than 134 years and has produced well known cricketers who have done well and represented the country. of the calibre of T B Kehelgamuwa and Chamara Kapugedera Kingswood College is a school,where cricket takes pride of place and many cricketers have enjoyed the game.

The year 1962 was one of their finest years in which they won several matches sand beat Trinity College for the first time

Cricket remains as one of the most popular sports at school level, and there are more reasons to support it. It doesn’t cost much to play cricket, today the expensive part in cricket is the ground fee.
