Pfizer as booster dose for frontline workers,those above 60

Vaccination programme nearing final phase

Over 2.4 million Pfizer vaccine doses will be imported to this country before the end of November to enable a third dose of the vaccination to be given to the frontline health workers and priority groups.

Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana told the media in Anuradhapura on Saturday that the vaccination programme against the Corona pandemic is nearing its final phase.

Arrangements have been made to vaccinate all schoolchildren between 16 and 19 and youth with the first dose and the Pfizer vaccine is being used for this purpose.

“It is expected to give the Pfizer vaccine as a third dose from the first week of November to frontline health workers, Security Forces personnel participating in Corona prevention work and those engaged in the tourism industry.” President Gotabaya Rajapaksa disclosed this at a recent Covid Committee meeting held over Zoom.

Preparations will be made to give persons over 60 with the Pfizer vaccine as a third dose and orders have been placed for all the required Pfizer vaccines.The vaccination programme is going ahead smoothly at the moment.

A total of 14,975,778 persons have been inoculated with the first dose while 13,126,455 have received the second dose as well. Accordingly, 89 per cent of the population had received both doses, which places Sri Lanka among the top ranking countries in terms of vaccination.

Sri Lanka has received 34.4 million doses of vaccines, comprising 26 million doses of Sinopharm (China), 2.8 million doses of AstraZeneca (UK/Sweden), 2.7 million doses of Pfizer (US), 1.5 million doses of Moderna (US, through COVAX) and 330,000 doses of Sputnik V (Russia).
