Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath said a special team would be sent to look into the quality of all bridges currently in operation in the Eastern Province.

She said the committee will comprise the Police, Engineering Division of the Provincial Road Development Authority and the Navy.

She was responding to a question raised by a journalist when she visited the Kinniya Hospital yesterday morning to speak to those injured in Tuesday’s ferry capsize in which several, including schoolchildren, died and many more were injured.

The ferry is used to transport people across the Kurunjankeni Lagoon as the bridge connecting Kinniya to Kurunjankulam is still under construction.

“We are now investigating this incident,” Governor Yahampath said. “The report will be received this afternoon. We will take further action on the recommendations contained in that report. If there are culprits, we will not hesitate to take action against them. No one can escape responsibility. At present transport facilities required for the people are being provided by the Navy. The Government is focusing on completing the work on the bridge as soon as possible.”
