I like to share my experience with youngsters, says skipper Karunaratne

We made a good effort as a team and finally we achieved that success to win the first Test, said Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne who also won the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his excellent batting performance at Galle.

“This is a great Test win for me after a very long period in Test cricket. I used my experience and always share it with the youngsters and it also brought success in this game. We were lucky to be able to avoid the rain until after we had already won. Anyway, our team has shown great effort from the start”.

“For my performance, I am really happy with my good knock at this game. I worked hard to earn this century. Especially after I scored a century against South Africa last December which gave me a big boost to come up, I had talked to coach Mickey Arthur and got his advice to gain my rhythm. I had no matches for nearly six months even club matches also washed out and I was less experienced before the start of this Test. But I knew the first 15 overs were very important, and when I played during that period, I had the confidence to build up my innings. Anyway, I was nervous at the beginning of the first innings with less practice but I was more confident in the second innings,” added left-hand opener Karunaratne. I have some targets to achieve, so I’m working towards those and if I will reach them it is always good for the team as well.

“Our youngsters are getting the experience and we needed someone like Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal for these conditions. Especially our three young spinners Mendis, Embuldeniya, and Jayawickrama have done a good job and even our two paceman Lakmal and Chameera are also in good form”.

We didn’t know how the Galle wicket was going to behave because it had been raining for the last few months but we have some idea now and we’ll decide the playing eleven for the second game later said Karunaratne.

Meanwhile, West Indies skipper Kreigg Brathwaite said, “I admire Joshua and Bonner, the way they fought from yesterday evening, was tremendous. I always believe first innings total is important, and then build pressure. The Sri Lanka skipper played well. It was important for them to build up their Innings. Toss is crucial but at the end of the day, you’ve to play good cricket. Gabriel getting two wickets, Roston getting five, we were decent, they batted well but our batting let us down,” added Brathwaite.
