Sri Lanka to buy 20,000 MT of rice from Myanmar

The Cabinet has approved the import of 20,000 Metric Tonnes of rice from Myanmar on a Government to Government agreement. The agreement between Sri Lanka and Myanmar will see that a Metric Tonne is purchased at 460 US Dollars and the purchasing would be carried out by the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation.

The Cabinet of Ministers previously granted their consent to import 100,000 metric tonnes of rice in order to keep sufficient buffer rice stocks without any shortage and to maintain a safe stock of rice.

The government yesterday assured that there is no rice shortage in the country.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Plantation Minister Dr.Ramesh Pathirana yesterday said that the price of rice has gradually increased over a period of time especially during the last three months. That’s why the government initiated the mechanism to import a certain quantity of rice to ensure that there is a price-established mechanism, he said.
